start again no. 21: running, the story of us, a short story, the class
Hey ππ½
On day 4 of this week of waiting, I decided to go for a run.
I didnβt want to. At the time, it seemed like a good way to navigate the growing maze of unanswered questions cluttering my mind and heart.
Assuming apocalyptic weather I dressed for winter, cautiously pleased to be greeted by the warm breeze of a summer day when I stepped outside.
I started running in the parking lot, dodging cars and people.
What are we going to do on the other side of this?
I wondered.
How will life be different when it resumes?
Inches into the first hill, already overheating, I felt a sharp pain in my left side. I bowed my head, gritted my teeth and started counting steps.
1,2
What if this is the new normal?
The question hung then disappeared as I ran faster. My mind emptied in between breaths.
Suddenly I was on a sidewalk on a beautiful day, distantly surrounded by neighbors, dogs and cherry blossoms.
247, 248
A man with bright white teeth, blue running shorts and Airpods flashed a smile as he zoomed past me, going the other direction.
My legs forced my mind to stop waiting for answers, to stop trying to see the maze. For a moment, I was just in it.
Here are a few things I enjoyed as a break from the news cycle this week:
π§ the story of us Wait but why, a really long time
All about the longreads this week. Tim Urban spent 3 years working on a series of illustrated blog posts that help us understand society and βwhy itβs perilous to write about society.β Tbh, Iβve only read the first 5 chapters of this 11 chapter series but have been surprised and inspired throughout. Lmk what you think.
