start again today no. 54: mentors, time CEO, flow state 🌊

Hey πŸ‘‹πŸ½,

Over the last few weeks I’ve sought out mentors to help me approach everything from strategy to yoga to self development to parenting with a beginner’s mind. Admitting that I have so much left to learn feels like the first step in a 12 step program that’s been sending me mailers since the 90s. Now the real work can begin.

On Monday, a mentor sent me an email highlighting a favorite quote:

"The more you do the more you can do." - William Hazlitt

I kept this quote up throughout the week as I banged my head against an over scheduled wall. Every 15m increment of the day was planned, leaving little time for the diffuse thinking that helps you get big stuff done or the serendipitous moments that ground you when you need it most. You know the feeling. It was the kind of week that forces change, reminding me that I am CEO of my time. A great time-CEO adds a 1.25-1.5x multiplier to activities to allow things to take longer than expected and makes time for stillness and play. They understand the importance of creating flexibility and saying no, remembering always how their happiness or frenetic-ness ripples out to all around them.

Determined to channel my inner time-CEO energy and prevail over my schedule, I signed up for a late night flow.club session on Thursday. The session ended with a much shorter to do list, and a quote from a Peloton instructor via founder Ricky Yean

β€œYou can do hard things, because you’re already doing them.”

I left the session freed of the weight of the unfinished work world on my shoulders. Time for play. The Hazlitt quote from the beginning of the week called to me, so I went down the rabbit hole to discover the full context of the quote.

β€œThe more we do, the more we can do; the more busy we are, the more leisure we have.”

Time for stillness.

I see you, I love you, have a great week,

H
